Founded in 1944, Kia Motors Corp began as a bicycle parts maker and now produces passenger cars, vans and cargo trucks. Based in Seoul, South Korea. Kia means to "arise or come up out of Asia."
Kia Motors America, based in Irvine, CA was incorporated in 1992 to sell vehicles in the United States. February 1994 marked Kia's official entry into the US auto market, selling vehicles at four dealerships in Portland, OR. Kia Motors Manufacturing Georgia, Inc was founded March 2006 when Kia Motors announced it would construct a $1 billion automotive assembly and manufacturing plant in West Point, GA, the first plant for Kia in North America. Production is set to begin in November 2009. Test vehicles are already being produced. Plant to employ approximately 2500 people.
